Onboard Experience:
How does tipping work?
Prepaid gratuities cover all onboard ship's crew and your AmaWaterways Cruise Manager. They do not include gratuities for local guides and bus drivers during shore excursions or for hotel staff on any optional pre- or post-cruise land packages.
Is the dress code on the ship relaxed or a little more formal?
Since this is a charter, we control the dress code, and we want you to be comfortable! No dress code!
Are there going to be any theme nights?
We are definitely going to have some holiday evenings, but no full theme nights! Go ahead and prepare to pack those Christmas sweaters (ugly and regular) and stay tuned for additional details.
What is dining like onboard?
AmaWaterways offers an exceptional dining experience featuring locally inspired cuisine that reflects the regions you're visiting. They often incorporate seasonal specialties inspired by the destinations you're visiting, such as festive pastries, roasted meats, mulled wine flavors, and regional holiday desserts. Guests can also enjoy The Chef's Table, a specialty restaurant offering a unique tasting menu at no additional charge (reservation required). While they tend to favor local flavors, as a charter, we have requested that additional American-style dishes also be available.

Are we required to have a Visa for this cruise?
While travel requirements vary, if you are a US Citizen with a US Passport, no visas are currently needed
ETIAS Status
As of July 2026, ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is still not in operation, and travelers cannot apply yet. The rollout has been delayed again due to ongoing issues with the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES), which must be fully stabilized before ETIAS can begin.
What is the Entry/Exit System (EES)?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new European Union border control system that will electronically record the entry and exit of travelers from non-EU countries, including U.S. citizens, when entering most Schengen Area countries. The system is designed to replace the manual passport stamping process and improve border security.
When will we receive our cruise documents, along with hotel details?
We will send your cruise documents about 30 days before departure. This will also include your hotel confirmation for the Travel Partners Specialty Tours supplied hotels.
Shore Excursions
When can I select my shore excursions?
A list of shore excursions will be sent to you approximately 60 days before departure and can be selected in your AmaWaterways account.
Do the shore excursions include the Christmas Market?
Yes! The shore excursions are full of amazing European history, and the Christmas Markets are an amazing addition to the experience.
Do the shore excursions include free time?
Some shore excursions include free time; once the excursion details are sent, they will note any free time.
Are there different excursion levels?
Yes, AmaWaterways offers several excursion options designed to accommodate different interests and activity levels. Most walking tours are available in one or more of the following categories:
- Gentle Walkers
- Regular Walkers
- Active Walkers
- Late Starters
Foreign Currency
Do we need to obtain foreign currency?
Austria and Germany use the Euro (€), while Hungary uses the Hungarian Forint (HUF). We recommend bringing a small amount of local currency for purchases at Christmas market vendors, public restrooms, or smaller cafés. You can obtain foreign currency through your local bank before departure, at airport currency exchange counters, or by using an ATM upon arrival in Europe. In most cases, using an ATM in your destination provides one of the best exchange rates. When paying by credit card, choose to be charged in the local currency rather than U.S. dollars to receive the most favorable exchange rate.

What Christmas magic do you have in store for us?
While Santa’s elves can’t divulge that information, it’s best to be the best you can be! You never know if Santa (or Krampus) is watching!
Are there any upgrades available?
Yes! As of now, there are a limited number of French and outdoor balcony staterooms, with additional space, that have opened up. If you are interested in looking into a new stateroom, reach out to your travel consultant!
What can we expect from the weather?
Early December along the Danube is typically cold, crisp, and festive. Throughout your journey in Hungary, Austria, and Germany, expect daytime temperatures ranging from 35–45°F and overnight lows between 25–35°F. While snow isn't guaranteed, light snow showers are possible, and you may also encounter occasional rain, morning fog, and overcast skies.
What are some clothing tips for the trip?
Layers and a great coat with winter wear! We also recommend boots that will keep your feet warm! See examples of my boots and coat.
